Macao's general unemployment rate from January to March remains at 2.9 pct

MACAO, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Macao's general unemployment rate for the period from January to March 2021 held steady over the previous period from December 2020 to February 2021 at 2.9 percent, the special administrative region's (SAR) statistics department said on Friday.

The latest report from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the unemployment rate of local residents was 4.0 percent, up 0.1 percentage point from the previous period.

The underemployment rate rose 0.3 percentage point to 4.8 percent, while the labor force participation rate was 69.9 percent, the DSEC report added.

The labor force living in Macao totaled 396,600. Total employment was 384,900 and the number of employed residents totaled 281,400, down by 2,000 and 1,200 respectively from the previous period.

The number of unemployed increased by 100 from the previous period to 11,600. Among the unemployed population searching for a new job, most of them were previously engaged in gaming and junket activities and the construction sector.

Meanwhile, the proportion of new labor market entrants seeking their first job increased 0.5 percentage point to 8.7 percent of the total unemployed.
