China is witnessing a travel peak during the May Day holiday that lasts from May 1 to 5 this year.

Macao has become a popular pick for mainland tourists during the holiday.

Macao's border ports with the mainland and the police force have made thorough preparations for the holiday, during which the daily number of visitor arrivals to Macao is expected to be 20 percent higher than the daily highest record since the COVID-19 outbreak, said Ng Kam Wa, commissioner of Macao's Public Security Police Force.

According to Macao's Public Security Police Force, Macao recorded over 400,000 entries and exits on Friday, with around 41,000 visitor arrivals. Both figures were the daily highest since the COVID-19 outbreak. As of 5 p.m. on Saturday, the first day of the May Day holiday, over 180,000 entries and exits were recorded at Macao's border ports.

Meanwhile, Macao's hotel occupancy rate has also been rising. Ho Iat Seng, chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region, said on Friday that the booking rate of hotels in Macao during the May Day holiday is "satisfactory." According to the landmark Grand Lisboa Hotel, over 90 percent of its rooms had been booked for the first three days of the holiday. About 90 percent of the guests are from the mainland.

Macao has been actively promoting itself as a safe and quality destination for mainland tourists, organizing promotional events in different mainland cities and offering discounts for payments made on electronic platforms.
