The lucid water of the Hukou Waterfall on the middle reaches of the Yellow River in northwest China has drawn tourists from across the country.

The Yellow River, as its name suggests, used to have yellow-colored water because it runs past the Loess Plateau. The plateau used to be plagued by chronic soil erosion, resulting in ecological imbalance. Tens of millions of tonnes of mud and sand washed into the Yellow River every year, making up most of the silt.

Thanks to water and soil conservation efforts in recent years, such as afforestation projects, the amount of sand running into the Yellow River from the province dropped greatly.

With enlarged forest coverage, landscape along China's second longest waterway is going green.

The Hukou Waterfall sees the streams of the river narrow suddenly and drop 30 meters into a deep river bed. It is known for its yellow water and thunderous sound.

The waterfall lies on the boundary of Yichuan County of Shaanxi Province and Jixian County in Shanxi Province.
