TEHRAN, May 6 (Xinhua) -- The Iranian health ministry reported on Thursday 18,409 new COVID-19 cases, taking the country's total infections to 2,610,018.
The pandemic has so far claimed 73,906 lives in Iran, up by 338 in the past 24 hours, the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education said in a written briefing published on its official website.
A total of 2,057,692 people have recovered from the disease or been discharged from hospitals across the country, while 5,515 remain in intensive care units, the ministry said.
The report added that 16,652,514 tests have so far been carried out across the country.
As of Thursday, 1,181,241 people have received the first dose of coronavirus vaccines and 244,526 people got the second dose.
In the morning, Alireza Raisi, spokesman for Iran's headquarters fighting the coronavirus, said that the country will produce monthly between 8.5 and 9 million doses of vaccine against COVID-19 by August, state TV reported.
Tehran has recently implemented restrictions on businesses and travels in high-risk areas amid a new wave of the virus spread in the country.
