TEHRAN, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Judiciary Chief Ebrahim Raisi on Saturday registered to officially run in the country's upcoming presidential election, after announcing his bid for the presidency as an independent candidate.

He arrived at the Iranian Interior Ministry's election headquarters here on Saturday, the last day of the registration process, to sign up to run in the election on June 18.

"Seeing the living conditions of the people; the issues of unemployment, high prices, the people's livelihood, and the economic situation are a major cause for concern," Raisi was quoted by Iranian news network Press TV as saying.

The judiciary chief seeks to bring changes in the country's executive management and launch a campaign against poverty, corruption and discrimination, according to a statement released earlier in the day.

Raisi lost the vote to incumbent President Hassan Rouhani in the 2017 presidential election.

Iran's Ministry of Interior Affairs officially started registering candidates for the 13th presidential race on Tuesday.

After the registration, the Guardian Council of the Constitution, the country's highest legislative body, will assess the qualification of the applicants and release the names of qualified candidates by May 27.

The nominees will have 20 days to campaign before election day. Enditem
