HAVANA, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Cuba reported more than 3,000 daily COVID-19 infections on Tuesday for the first time, after registering 3,080 in the last day, for a total of 188,023 cases, the Ministry of Public Health said.

In its daily report, the ministry also recorded 17 more deaths, bringing the death toll to 1,270.

Of the new daily cases, 3,006 were from community transmission, the ministry's director of hygiene and epidemiology Francisco Duran reported.

The province of Matanzas has become the epicenter of the pandemic on the island, with 753 cases in the last day and an incidence rate of 569 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Havana, which was the epicenter, has seen a decline in cases after the ministry extended its emergency vaccination campaign to the entire capital using the Cuban vaccine candidate Abdala.

Authorities hope to immunize all 2.2 million residents of Havana by the end of July.

The drive continues in the provinces of Pinar del Rio, Matanzas, Santiago de Cuba and the Special Municipality of Isla de la Juventud.

So far, 5.67 million doses of Abdala and Soberana-02, another vaccine candidate, have been administered, with over 2.69 million Cubans receiving at least one vaccine dose. Enditem
