COLOMBO, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the COVID-19 exceeded 3,000 in Sri Lanka on Wednesday after 45 deaths were reported, statistics from the Health Ministry showed.

According to official figures, the death toll reached 3,030 while the total infected patient count reached 257,225, since the first local patient was detected in March last year.

Sri Lanka presently has an active patient count of 30,769 as the country faces a third wave of the pandemic following the detection of new Delta and Alpha variants, health officials said.

Hospitals continue to function at maximum capacity while health experts said more youngsters were being admitted who needed critical care.

Sri Lanka has made it mandatory to wear face masks and maintain social distance and while authorities lifted a nearly month long nationwide lockdown earlier this week, public gatherings continue to be banned.

Restaurants are also prevented from taking in customers for dine-in while schools continue to be closed. Enditem
