Colombia reports case of COVID-19 Delta variant

BOGOTA, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Colombian President Ivan Duque confirmed on Saturday that the Delta variant of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is circulating in the country.

"The National Institute of Health has identified the presence of the Delta variant in our country in a case that was subjected to examination in the city of Cali and that has already been treated with all medical protocols," he said.

Duque called on citizens to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible, adding that this variant currently has a presence in 105 countries around the world and has been proven to have a higher level of transmissibility.

Director of the National Institute of Health Martha Lucia Ospina said that the infected person had been placed in isolation after returning from a trip to the United States.

According to the Ministry of Health, Colombia has reported 4,705,734 cases and 118,188 deaths from the disease, while more than 11 million people have been fully vaccinated. Enditem
