JERUSALEM, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- The number of new HIV infections in Israel dropped by 5.2 percent in 2020 year on year, said an annual report released by the state's Ministry of Health on Wednesday.

Last year, 361 people got HIV infections in Israel, down from 381 in 2019 and 431 in 2018, according to the report.

According to the ministry's data, from 1981 to the end of 2020, 10,769 cases of HIV were detected in Israel.

One of the main reasons for the recent decline is the preventive treatment, known medically as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), which is a pill that is taken daily and prevents infection with the virus.

Also, advanced treatments that people with HIV receive significantly reduce their viral load, thus effectively preventing the transmission of the virus to others. Enditem
