TEHRAN, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Sunday that Iran welcomes the announcement made by former Afghan President Hamid Karzai to form a "coordination council" and stands ready to "continue its peacemaking efforts."

Iran welcomes the announcement by Karzai, Zarif said, adding that "we hope that it can lead to dialogue and a peaceful transition in Afghanistan."

Earlier this month, Iran's chief diplomat blamed the wrong policies of "foreign powers" in Afghanistan for the deteriorating security situation in the country.

Karzai announced on Sunday night that Afghan leaders formed a "coordination council" to administer a peaceful transition of power, ensure security, law and order, and put an end to the chaos.

Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani left the country on Sunday night as the Taliban has ordered its forces to enter the capital city of Kabul. Enditem
