SHANGHAI, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai saw its soybean imports from the United States soar to 2.53 million tonnes, up 92.5 percent year on year, accounting for 40.7 percent of its total imported soybeans from January to June, customs authorities said Tuesday.

The city imported about 6.22 million tonnes of soybeans in the first half of this year, an increase of 1.1 percent from the same period last year.

During the period, the megacity imported about 3.68 million tonnes of soybeans from Brazil, down 22.1 percent year on year. However, Brazil remains the city's largest source of imported soybeans.

The total value of soybean imports in Shanghai from January to June reached 19.87 billion yuan (about 3.1 billion U.S. dollars), up 17.3 percent year on year, showed data. The rise is mainly attributable to the increase in the price of imports. Enditem
