MOSCOW, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Russia confirmed 34,073 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 8,094,825, the official monitoring and response center said Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the nationwide death toll grew by a record daily increase of 1,028 to 226,353, and the number of recoveries rose by 25,231 to 7,065,712.

Moscow, Russia's worst-hit region, reported 5,847 new cases, taking the citywide total to 1,737,784.

The Moscow government has ordered residents above the age of 60 and those suffering from chronic illnesses to self-isolate from Oct. 25 to Feb. 25, although they are permitted to take walks or exercise outdoors. Enditem
