MOSCOW, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Russia registered 40,217 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 8,673,860, the official monitoring and response center said on Thursday.

The nationwide death toll grew by a record daily increase of 1,195 to 243,255, while the number of recoveries increased by 31,928 to 7,477,366.

Meanwhile, Moscow, Russia's worst-hit region, reported 6,305 new cases, taking its total to 1,843,362.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced on Wednesday that the non-working period introduced in the capital from Oct. 28 to Nov. 7 will not be extended.

Other restrictions imposed earlier in Moscow, such as a transition to no less than 30 percent of staff to remote work, self-isolation for the elderly, and a QR code system for museums and theaters, will remain in place.

A study published in the Lancet on Tuesday, a leading medical journal, confirmed the efficacy and safety of the Russian Sputnik Light vaccine, a new single-dose vaccine against coronavirus. Enditem
