ACCRA, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Ghana confirmed the first community infections of the Omicron variant, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) said late Sunday.

Speaking on a local TV show, Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the GHS, revealed that seven new cases were detected following community testing, increasing the number of the new variant recorded in Ghana to 41.

"After the first 34 cases recorded at the airport, we sequenced about 66 community samples, and they were all negative. But after the second batch of about 44 tests, seven cases were detected," said the official.

Kuma-Aboagye added that the Delta variant remained dominant in Ghanaian communities.

As the festive season is drawing near, Ghana has tightened its anti-virus measures by only allowing fully-vaccinated travelers to enter the country. Enditem
