ADEN, Yemen, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed in shelling carried out by the Houthi group against Yemen's oil-rich province of Shabwa on Wednesday, a government official told Xinhua.

The local government source said on condition of anonymity that the shells landed indiscriminately on a civilian fuel station in the western part of the government-controlled province, with several others injured at the scene, and civilian properties damaged.

Houthi lost the area, where the targeted fuel station is located, to government forces during last week's battles, according to the official.

During the past two weeks, a large-scale military operation has been carried out by the southern Giants Brigades against the Houthis in Shabwa. The military campaign allowed the pro-government forces to fully capture the oil-rich province after days of intense battles.

Yemen has been mired in a civil war since the Houthi militia overran much of the country and seized all northern provinces, including the capital Sanaa, in 2014.
