RAMALLAH, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Palestine recorded 5,577 fatalities, 651,000 infections and 635,346 recoveries from COVID-19 since the first cases were detected in the West Bank district of Bethlehem in March 2020, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said in a report published on Saturday.

Of the fatalities, 3,639 were recorded in the West Bank and 1,938 in the Gaza Strip.

Since January 2022, the ministry has recorded 180,000 cases due to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

"Around 195 patients are still receiving medical treatment in Palestinian hospitals in the West Bank and Gaza, including 119 who are receiving intensive care," the report said, adding that 26 patients are on ventilators.

Around 2 million Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip have been vaccinated, according to the report.
