JERUSALEM, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Israel on Monday accused Jordan of "spreading fake news" after Jordan urged Israel to stop "illegal violations" at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said in a video statement that he sees "with great gravity" the praises to Palestinians who have been clashing with Israeli police at the holy site over the past days.

Bennett referred to an earlier remark by Jordan's Prime Minister Bisher Al-Khasawneh, who in a speech to the parliament in Amman praised "those who throw rocks at the pro-Zionists who are defiling Al-Aqsa Mosque."

"This is unacceptable," Bennett said, condemning the Jordanian prime minister's remarks as "a reward for inciters, led by Hamas, which is trying to incite violence in Jerusalem."

The rare remarks came amid a spate of violence in the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Israel and Jordan signed a peace treaty in 1994 and have maintained peaceful relations.
