Shanghai Lingang Makeshift Hospital has upgraded about 2,000 beds with oxygen cylinders, monitors and sputum suction devices being equipped to provide better treatment for severe and elderly patients in the city's battle against the COVID-19.

Li is among the first batch of elderly COVID-19 patients the hospital has received when he developed a fever, headache and cough. He's better now after receiving treatment.

China has been encouraging the elderly to get vaccinated. So far in Shanghai, about 62 percent of residents aged 60 and above have received COVID-19 vaccination, but only 38 percent of them have received booster shots.

In Shanghai's makeshift hospitals, elderly patients with dementia and disability will be given particular concern.
