KIGALI, Sep. 14 (Xinhua) -- Rwandan President Paul Kagame has pardoned jailed politician Victoire Ingabire and musician Kizito Mihigo, the Ministry of Justice announced late Friday.

The two were among 2,140 inmates to be released on a presidential pardon, the ministry said in a statement.

The decision of early release was approved at a cabinet meeting on Friday chaired by Kagame.

"The cabinet meeting today approved the early release of 2,140 convicts found eligible under relevant provisions of law," the statement said.

Ingabire was sentenced to 15 years in 2013 by the Supreme Court after being found guilty of conspiring to harm the country through terror and minimizing the 1994 genocide against Tutsi.

Mihigo, a popular musician, was sentenced to 10 years in 2015 by the High Court in Kigali after being found guilty of conspiracy to overthrow the government and conspiracy to form alliance with negative forces bent on destabilizing the government.
