LAGOS, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria's terrorist group Boko Haram has killed an aid worker with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Nigerian government said late Monday.

In a statement sent to Xinhua in Lagos, Nigeria's economic hub, Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed said the government is shocked and saddened by the killing of aid worker Hauwa Mohammed Liman despite the actions taken by the government and the widespread appeal to save the young woman.

"It is very unfortunate that it has come to this. Before and after the deadline issued by her abductors, the Federal Government did everything any responsible government should do to save the aid worker," the minister said.

Liman worked in a hospital supported by the ICRC when she was abducted in March this year together with Alice Loksha, a nurse who worked in a center supported by the United Nations Children's Fund.

The minister said the government negotiations are being continued to save a third woman who remains in custody.

The ICRC had on Sunday raised an alarm over the 24-hour deadline given by Boko Haram. Mamadou Sow, head of ICRC's Operations in the Lake Chad Basin, appealed to the Nigerian government, communities and individuals to secure the release of two medical workers.
