TRIPOLI, July 22 (Xinhua) -- A fighter jet of Libyan eastern-based army on Monday made an emergency landing in neighboring Tunisia, the eastern-based government's foreign ministry said.
"The military aircraft L39 was on a reconnaissance and patrol mission and suffered a technical default that led to an emergency landing in Tunisia," the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry is in contact with the Tunisian authorities to ensure the safe return of the jet and the pilot, the statement added.
Libya is politically divided between eastern and western governments, despite a UN-sponsored political agreement signed by the Libyan parties later in 2015.
The eastern-based army, led by Khalifa Haftar, has been leading a military campaign since early April to take over the capital Tripoli.
The fighting so far has killed over 1,000 people, injured more than 5,700 others, and forced over 120,000 people to flee their homes, according to the World Health Organization.
