TRIPOLI, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. embassy in Libya Saturday expressed concern over "contemplated" military action between Libya's UN-backed government and the east-based army.
"The U.S. embassy notes with concern credible reports that significant military actions are being contemplated by forces affiliated with both the Libyan National Army and the Government of National Accord in the near future," the embassy said in a statement.
"Such actions would violate the understandings reached in Berlin," said the statement, adding "we (the U.S. embassy in Libya) call on both parties and their external supporters to carefully consider the risks inherent in such actions, and to redouble support for the UN-facilitated security dialogue" for a lasting cease-fire.
The east-based army has been leading a military campaign since April 2019 in and around the capital Tripoli, attempting to take over the city and topple the UN-backed government.
The fighting killed and injured thousands of people and forced more than 150,000 civilians to flee their homes.
A conference regarding the Libyan issue was recently held in Germany's Berlin, where participants have agreed to respect the arms embargo and truce in the war-torn North African country and pledged to establish an oversight mechanism to ensure long-term peace.
