HARARE, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Zimbabwe government on Monday accused some western countries - working with local opposition parties and civic groups, seeking to destabilize the country through violent means.

Minister of State for National Security Owen Ncube told journalists some that western governments were working with "rogue elements" to establish violent militia groups and smuggling guns into the country.

"Zimbabwe's security and stability is currently under siege from a number of threats being fomented by internal and external actors," said Ncube, who refused to take questions from journalists after the briefing.

"We are watching attempts to drive Zimbabwe into chaos. Some rogue elements among us are conniving with hostile western governments to smuggle guns and set up so-called democratic resistance committees that are for all intents and purposes violent militia groups," he said.

Ncube said the country's security sector would take "concrete steps" to deal with the threats.

Ncube said some western embassies, the opposition MDC Alliance, civic organizations, student groups and self-exiled former members in the previous Zimbabwe government, were among those pushing the destabilization agenda.

He said some of the acts meant to cause chaos included fake abductions and propagation of lies on social media.

"As security services we know and appreciate that they will never see anything done in Zimbabwe in good light until the land reform is reversed and opposition comes into power," he said.

"We want to reassure citizens that the state security sector is alive to the machinations of the MDC Alliance, hostile CSOs and their Western handlers. Our gallant security men and women will stand firm in defence of the national interest and sovereignty to allow government to focus on delivering its Vision 2030," he said. Enditem
