LUSAKA, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese telecommunications company Huawei Technologies on Monday donated assorted food items to a refugee settlement in Lusaka, the Zambian capital.

The donation, made to the Makeni Refugee Transit Centre situated on the outskirts of the Zambian capital, is worth more than 10,000 U.S. dollars, including mealie-meal, sugar, rice, and cooking oil.

Hansen He, public relations director of Huawei Zambia, said the company is glad to partner with the Ministry of Home Affairs in making the donation.

He said Huawei believes people who have food become productive members of any country, adding the donation is meant to meet the needs of the refugees.

Minister of Home Affairs Stephen Kampyongo welcomed the donation from Huawei, saying it will complement the government's efforts in meeting the needs of the refugees.

The government has faced challenges in providing various essential services to refugees due to constrained finances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the official added.

The Zambian minister also said the donation has come at an ideal time of Christmas and New Year celebrations as the refugees have no relatives to share gifts with during the festive season. Enditem
