CAIRO, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Egyptian army said on Monday that its forces destroyed four smuggling tunnels in North Sinai, foiled illegal immigration attempts, and seized large numbers of weapons and ammunitions nationwide in January.

In a statement, the Egyptian army said border guards seized three sniper rifles, three machine guns, 11 automatic rifles, 12 shotguns, 90 air rifles, 2,500 bullets, and 15 satellite phones during January's operations.

Furthermore, 140 vehicles used for smuggling, large quantities of smuggled goods, 535,000 narcotic drugs, and 7 kg of gold were also seized.

Meanwhile, border guards arrested 170 smugglers and suspects, the statement said, adding that the forces foiled the infiltration of 3,740 foreign migrants into the country.

Egypt has been fighting against a wave of terrorism that has killed hundreds of policemen, soldiers, and civilians since the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 and the massive crackdown on the currently outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group. Enditem
