LUSAKA, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Friday warned citizens against engaging in irresponsible behavior during the long Easter holiday.

The Zambian leader said citizens should desist from reckless behavior such as alcohol abuse, violence, and immoral acts during the Easter holiday but should instead use the holiday to render a helping hand to people in need.

"The Easter triduum is a call to all of us to engage in acts of charity, mercy including preaching salvation, love, peace, and unity to everyone. As we observe this sacred period, reckless merry-making and other uncouth behaviors should not take center stage in our lives," he said in a statement posted on his Facebook page.

He said families should use the period to create bonds, adding that united families will result in having a united nation.

The Zambian leader also urged citizens not to lower the guard against the COVID-19 pandemic but continue to observe preventive guidelines such as social distancing and wearing of face masks.

"Countrymen and women, I remain confident that during this period, everyone from different walks of their lives will exercise maximum restraint by living in harmony, love, peace, and unity and will continue to do so especially as general elections approach on 12th August 2021," he said.

This year's Easter holiday starts on Friday and ends next Monday. Enditem
