NAIROBI, April 13 (Xinhua) -- The Nairobi Securities Exchange said Tuesday that its mobile app has recorded 10.7 billion shillings (about 100 million U.S. dollars) in trades since the beginning of 2021.

Terrence Adembesa, the chief officer at derivatives market with Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), told a virtual meeting that so far there have been 5,000 downloads and 20,000 subscribers who are trading through the mobile platform.

"The mobile app is an alternative platform to enhance participation of retail investors in the capital markets," Adembesa said during the annual Capital Markets Authority (CMA) board engagement with market stakeholders.

NSE launched the mobile app in June 2020 to provide market participants with faster and real-time access to the exchange's activities.

Adembesa observed that the securities exchange will leverage on high mobile penetration rate in the country to increase its pool of investors.

NSE plans to implement a digital public education and awareness campaign to highlight the role of capital markets as a source of long-term finance for businesses. Enditem
