ADDIS ABABA, April 13 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) disclosed on Tuesday that 80 percent of the rural parts in Ethiopia's conflict-hit Tigray regional state lack basic services.

Five months since the start of the conflict, the population in Tigray rural areas continue to lack access to basic services such as electricity, health, water and sanitation, and education, said a UNOCHA report.

The report said although there have been some improvements since March regarding humanitarian partners' access to Tigray, large areas of the region continue to be inaccessible.

"Despite these marked improvements, access to large areas of Tigray continues to be impeded by insecurity, and the humanitarian response remains limited, particularly in rural hard-to-reach areas," the report said.

Fighting that erupted in early November last year in Ethiopia's Tigray between the Tigray People's Liberation Front, which used to rule the regional state, and the Ethiopian National Defense Forces has left thousands of people killed and caused immense losses in the region.

According to Ethiopian government figures, the conflict in Tigray has displaced around 2.2 million people, while 4.5 million people are in need of emergency aid. Enditem
