Egypt, Morocco FMs discuss peaceful settlement of regional issues

CAIRO, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry held on Thursday virtual talks with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, during which they discussed bilateral relations and joint efforts to achieve peaceful settlement of regional issues, said the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

"Shoukry renewed Egypt's support for the UN solution to the Western Sahara issue with the aim of reaching a political solution in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2351," Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Hafez said in a statement.

Shoukry and Bourita also addressed the Palestinian cause and the efforts to resume the peace process between the Palestinians and the Israelis.

They both expressed their support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital based on the UN-backed two-state solution, according to the statement.

As for the Libya crisis, the two ministers agreed to intensify communication "to support reaching a comprehensive settlement of the crisis in Libya, in a manner that ensures restoring Libya's security and stability."

They also reaffirmed the necessity of prioritizing peaceful solutions to Arab issues and rejecting any foreign interference in the affairs of Arab states.

Held via video conference, the talks between Shoukry and Bourita also touched on the latest developments of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) built on the Nile River. Shoukry expressed appreciation of Morocco's support for Egypt on the issue, according to the statement.

The Egyptian and Moroccan foreign ministers agreed to intensify coordination between Cairo and Rabat within the framework of the African Union to boost peace and security in Africa. Enditem
