ADDIS ABABA, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopia registered 1,524 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 245,155 as of Tuesday evening, the country's health ministry said.

A total of 47 more deaths from the coronavirus were reported across the country during the same period, bringing the national death toll to 3,439, the ministry added.

The East African country also reported 1,290 more recoveries, taking the national count of recoveries to 181,935.

Ethiopia, Africa's second most populous nation, is one of the countries hardest hit by COVID-19 in Africa.

The latest figures from the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that Ethiopia's COVID-19 cases accounted for about 5 percent of the continent's total.

Ethiopia is offering COVID-19 vaccine jabs after the country received its first 2.2 million vaccines from the COVAX Facility, the global initiative for equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines. Enditem
