LAGOS, May 28 (Xinhua) -- At least 14 people held by gunmen were recently rescued by Nigerian police in an operation in a suburb of the capital Abuja, a police spokesperson said Thursday.

Mariam Yusuf, a police spokesperson in Abuja, said in a statement that the 14 people were kidnapped at the Gauraka area of Niger state several days ago.

The operation led by the anti-kidnapping squad combed the forest along the Byhazin-Bwari axis in Abuja, and engaged in a fierce gun battle with the kidnappers.

Two suspects were arrested after police dislodged the gunmen, Yusuf said, adding other gunmen escaped with bullet wounds.

"The victims who appeared frail after several days in captivity are currently receiving medical attention," the spokesperson said. Enditem
