ABUJA, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Three people were crushed to death and two others sustained injuries on Wednesday morning in an accident involving a truck and a motorcycle in Nigeria's southwestern state of Oyo, local authorities said.

The incident happened on a busy road in Ibadan, the state capital, when the speeding motorcycle rider lost control and got crushed in an attempt to overtake the truck, said Uche Chukwurah, head of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Oyo.

Chukwurah told reporters in a press briefing in Ibadan that the driver of the truck, which was fully loaded with drinks, had also lost control of his vehicle as it experienced brake failure.

The motorcycle rider and his two passengers died on the spot, she said. Their remains were deposited at a nearby morgue, while the injured were taken to a hospital for treatment.

The road safety official appealed to motorists to avoid wrongful overtaking, drive carefully, and always obey traffic rules and regulations.

Deadly road accidents are frequently reported in Nigeria often due to overloading, bad condition of roads, and reckless driving. Enditem
