KINSHASA, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- The third wave of COVID-19 is steadily declining and under control in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), said Jean-Jacques Muyembe, coordinator of the national response to COVID-19.

In a press conference held in Kinshasa on Thursday, Muyembe stressed that the third wave is under control in DRC following the significant drop in cases of contamination.

"This is really a real drop, because our wave indicators are the number of patients who are hospitalized. When there really was a wave, our treatment centers were overwhelmed. And now, when you go to these centers, there are no more patients, the beds are empty, "said Muyembe.

But despite this decline, the coordinator has indicated that the epicenter of the disease has moved from DRC's capital to three other provinces, namely the provinces of North Kivu, Ituri and Haut-Uele, all located in the eastern part of the country, where several cases of death have been recorded in recent days.

Faced with this situation, the health authorities reaffirmed that measures are being taken to control the situation in the coming days.

"We need to stay vigilant, continue to wear the mask correctly and prepare for the vaccine. This is very important if we want to avoid a fourth wave," he noted.

"We are going to do everything to avoid a fourth wave, and that is why we must always be vigilant, and stop the illusion that the disease does not exist. And so we must prepare to take the vaccines because it is the only element that has really brought solutions in this against the COVID-19 pandemic," added Muyembe. Enditem
