Kenya launches toolkit to combat illegal wildlife trade

NAIROBI, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Kenya on Thursday launched a financial toolkit to combat illegal wildlife trade.

Najib Balala, the cabinet secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, said in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, that the toolkit is designed to help financial institutions identify, address and report suspicious transactions relating to illegal wildlife trade.

The toolkit will consist of a platform that will enable Kenya to be able to strengthen and share information on wildlife crime that will lead to apprehending and stopping illegal trade in wildlife, said the official Thursday that marks World Wildlife Day.

He pledged that the East African nation is committed to combating illegal wildlife trade and particularly saving endangered species.

"The full implementation of the toolkit that will contribute to the safeguarding of our flora and fauna for the benefit of future generations," said the official, adding that by eliminating illegal trade in wildlife products Kenya will be able to protect its iconic species that are the backbone of the tourism sector.
