PHNOM PENH, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia on Thursday confirmed 36 new COVID-19 cases, raising the total number of infections to 1,541, said a Ministry of Health (MoH) statement.

The new infections included 35 locally transmitted cases in southern Kandal province and capital Phnom Penh, and one imported case, the statement said.

The imported case was detected on a 53-year-old Filipino woman traveling to the kingdom on March 3 from the Philippines, it said, adding that she was found positive for the virus in her second test, on the 14th day of quarantine.

Cambodia has been enduring the third community COVID-19 outbreak since Feb. 20, with at least 1,025 people infected so far.

In a bid to contain the virus, the country has closed down all schools, sports facilities, museums, cinemas, and entertainment venues in cities and provinces, where the virus has been found.

According to the MoH, since the start of the pandemic in January last year, the country has officially recorded a total of 1,541 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with one death and 898 recoveries.

The Southeast Asian nation has launched an anti-COVID-19 vaccination drive with China's Sinopharm vaccine since Feb. 10 and with the Indian-made AstraZeneca vaccine since March 4. Enditem
