Wallis and Futuna reports first COVID-19 death

SUVA, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Wallis and Futuna has reported the first COVID-19 death, according to Radio New Zealand on Monday.

According to the report, an 83-year-old woman had been transferred from Futuna island to the Wallis Hospital earlier this month for other ailments. However, she tested positive for COVID-19 a week ago after her release from hospital. She died at the weekend after being rehospitalized.

Wallis and Futuna now has more than 300 COVID-19 cases since the first COVID-19 case was discovered in the community two weeks ago. Currently, 17 COVID-19 patients are in hospital, four of whom in intensive care.

Wallis and Futuna has extended its two-week lockdown to April 6.

Wallis and Futuna, located 280 km northeast of Fiji and 370 km west of Samoa in the South Pacific Ocean, is comprised of three main islands, namely Wallis, Futuna and Alofi, and a number of small islets. Enditem
