PHNOM PENH, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia on Monday reported one new death from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths from the coronavirus epidemic in the kingdom to four.

The Ministry of Health said in a statement that the deceased was a 75-year-old retired Cambodian doctor living in Porsenchey district of the capital Phnom Penh. He was confirmed to be with the virus on Sunday and had a history of hypertension.

The victim had suffered breath problems in the four days before he came to the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital for a COVID-19 test, the statement said, adding that he died on Monday morning although the doctors had used a ventilator to help him breathe.

"The doctors concluded that the patient died from the COVID-19, which caused severe damage to his both lungs," the statement said.

Cambodia has so far confirmed four COVID-19 deaths, with the first one, a 50-year-old man, reported on March 11 and the second and third ones, a 62-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man, on March 19.

According to the health ministry, the Southeast Asian nation has officially registered a total of 1,753 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.
