PHNOM PENH, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia reported 96 new local COVID-19 cases and one more death on Friday, the country's Ministry of Health (MoH) said in a statement.

Of the new infections, 74 cases were found in Kandal province, 20 in capital Phnom Penh, and two in Svay Rieng and Tboung Khmum provinces, the statement said.

The new dead was identified as a 55-year-old Phnom Penh Municipal traffic policeman, the statement said, adding that he confirmed to have COVID-19 on Thursday and died on the same day at the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital despite the help of a ventilator.

"The doctors concluded that the 55-year-old man died from the COVID-19, which caused severe damage to his lungs," the statement said.

The Southeast Asian nation has officially registered a total of 1,968 confirmed COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, with eight deaths and 1,074 recoveries, the MoH said.

The kingdom launched an anti-COVID-19 vaccination drive with China's Sinopharm vaccine on Feb. 10 and with Indian-made AstraZeneca vaccine on March 4.

As of Thursday, some 354,087 people in priority groups had been vaccinated against the virus, according to a government report. Enditem
