PHNOM PENH, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia confirmed another death from COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the total number of fatalities in the country to 17, the Ministry of Health (MoH) said in a statement.

The 61-year-old Cambodian woman succumbed to the disease on Thursday night at a COVID-19-designated hospital in Phnom Penh despite having been put on a ventilator, the statement said, adding that she was confirmed to have the virus on Wednesday.

"The doctors concluded that the 61-year-old Cambodian woman died from COVID-19, which caused severe damage to her lungs," the statement said.

The Southeast Asian nation has registered a total of 2,546 confirmed COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic in January last year, with 1,256 recoveries, the MoH said.

The country launched an inoculation drive on Feb. 10. As of Thursday, some 430,000 people in the priority groups had been vaccinated against the virus, a government report showed. Enditem
