PHNOM PENH, April 3 (Xinhua) -- The number of road fatalities in Cambodia declined to 433 people in the first quarter of 2021, a decrease of 12 percent from 493 over the same period last year, Interior Minister Sar Kheng said on Saturday.

Besides death toll, the accidents injured 1,113 others during the January-March period this year, down 15 percent from 1,315 over the same period last year, he wrote on his official Facebook page.

Kheng, who is also a deputy prime minister, said that 763 cases of road accidents had been reported, also down 17 percent from 916 cases.

"The drop in road casualties was thanks to traffic law enforcement and people's better awareness of the traffic law," he said.

Road traffic accidents are a leading cause of death in the Southeast Asian nation. Last year, the country reported 1,646 fatalities from the accidents. Enditem
