1 killed, buildings destroyed from Indonesia's earthquakes

JAKARTA, April 10 (Xinhua) -- One people was killed, another one was injured and scores of buildings and houses were destroyed after two 6.1-magnitude earthquakes rocked western and central parts of Indonesia Saturday, officials said.

The first quake struck at 2 p.m. Jakarta time (0700 GMT) Malang district in Indonesia's western province of East Java and the second one jolted at 4.30 p.m. Jakarta time (0930 GMT) in Sangihe islands district, Central Sulawesi province, Andry Sembiring, an official in charge at the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency told Xinhua.

In Malang district, one motorcyclist was dead and another one was wounded, I Wayan Suyatna, head of operational unit of the provincial disaster management agency told Xinhua by phone.

"They were hit by a big stone on their motorcycle when the quake occurred," the official said, adding scores of houses and buildings were also destroyed in the quakes.

Dozens of rescuers are carrying out evacuation and risk assessment, according to him. Enditem
