TASHKENT, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Uzbekistan will introduce new restrictions on public events, catering and transport services starting from April 18 amid surging COVID-19 infections, the state news agency UzA reported on Saturday.

According to the country's special commission on combating COVID-19, cafes, restaurants and public transport must use only 50 percent of their seating capacity, and the same rules apply to public meetings, as well as any scheduled international conferences and other events.

Earlier this month, the Uzbek authorities imposed similar restrictions on theaters, cinema halls and other mass cultural activity venues, and also limited the number of participants to 100 guests during wedding ceremonies, funerals and other family events.

So far Uzbekistan has registered a total of 86,022 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 635 related deaths. Enditem
