Taliban militants attack Kandahar city in S. Afghanistan

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, July 9 (Xinhua) -- The Taliban militants attacked Kandahar city, capital of Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province, on Friday in their push for a military victory, local Afghan military commander Abdul Salam said.

According to the official, the Taliban fighters stormed security checkpoints in Chulzina area, a suburban of Police District 7 of Kandahar city, at Friday noon, but the attack had been repulsed.

In the meantime, Jamal Barikzai, spokesman for the Kandahar police, also confirmed the attack, saying the Taliban offensive had been repulsed and the situation was under police control.

The official, however, didn't provide more details.

The Taliban militants who, according to the group's sources, have captured more than 170 districts in the country since the withdrawal of the U.S.-led forces from Afghanistan on May 1.

The Taliban's attacks on the northern Kunduz provincial capital Kunduz city, Qala-e-Naw, the capital of western Badghis province, and Taluqan, the capital of northern Takhar province, have also been repulsed.

Fighting has intensified and the Taliban militants have lost more than 100 fighters over the past 24 hours, according to Fawad Aman, a spokesman of the Afghan Defense Ministry. Enditem
