NEW DELHI, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Sale of passenger vehicles (PVs) in India rose by 45 percent to 264,442 units in July against 182,779 units in the same month last year, the country's auto-industry body Society Indian Automotive Manufacturers (SIAM) said Thursday.

The total production of PVs, three-wheelers, two-wheelers and quadricycle in July was 2,099,035 units, revealed the data released by SIAM.

Besides the PVs, domestic sales of three-wheelers were 17,888 units and two-wheeler sales were 1,253,937 units in July.

Commenting on the vehicles sales data, SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon said the country's automotive industry was treading a cautious path amid fears of a third wave of COVID-19 pandemic.

"Indian Automobile Industry continues to face heavy headwinds in the form of global semi-conductor shortage and steep rise in commodity prices. On one hand, the industry is managing such supply chain challenges while ensuring safety of its people, and on the other hand the industry is also keeping a close eye on the onset of a 3rd wave in India and across the world," said Menon in a statement.
