PHNOM PENH, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia has inched closer toward a country-set goal of vaccinating 12 million, or 75 percent of its 16-million population, against the COVID-19 by yearend, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Health (MoH) said on Thursday.

By Wednesday, some 10.9 million eligible people, or 68 percent of the total population, had received at least one vaccine dose and 8.6 million of them, or 53.7 percent of the total population, had been fully vaccinated with two doses, MoH's secretary of state and spokeswoman Or Vandine said in a report.

"As of Sept. 1, about 93 percent of the 10 million targeted adults and 80 percent of the 2 million targeted adolescents aged 12-17 had taken at least one vaccine dose," she said.

The Southeast Asian nation launched a COVID-19 vaccination drive in February, with China being the key vaccine supplier.

The United Nations in Cambodia said last month that Cambodia has one of the highest percentages of COVID-19 vaccination among its adult population in the World Health Organization (WHO) Western Pacific Region.

The kingdom confirmed 416 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, raising the national total caseload to 93,926, the MoH said, adding that 12 more fatalities had been reported, bringing the overall death toll to 1,928.

Another 386 patients have recovered, taking the total number of recoveries to 89,500, the MoH said. Enditem
