WELLINGTON, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- The New Zealand government on Tuesday laid out its long-term vision for housing and urban development to deal with the housing crisis.
The Government Policy Statement on Housing and Urban Development (GPS-HUD) provides clarity to all those working within the system about how government policies and investments will align to tackle the acute challenges of the current housing crisis, Housing Minister Megan Woods said in a statement.
The GPS-HUD will guide policy decisions and investment to deliver a shared, consistent, and enduring set of outcomes to achieve the government vision that "everyone in New Zealand lives in a home and within a community that meets their needs and aspirations," Woods said.
The GPS-HUD ensures more affordable homes are built, enabling people into stable, affordable homes, supporting communities to have healthy, affordable homes with secure tenure.
It also re-establishes housing's primary role as a home rather than a financial asset, she said, adding the GPS-HUD will be reviewed at least every three years.
"We already have a massive work program to address the issues that have led to this housing crisis, and we also need to consider long-term challenges like adapting to the effects of climate change and population growth," the minister said. Enditem
