PHNOM PENH, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's Anti-Drug Department police have arrested two men for attempting to smuggle over 19 kilograms of illicit drugs into Vietnam, the National Police reported on Monday.

The suspects, a 20-year-old Cambodian and an 18-year-old Vietnamese, were caught in Bavet City in Svay Rieng Province last Wednesday while they were transporting the drugs by a motorbike from capital Phnom Penh to Vietnam.

"A total of 19.48 kg of illicit drugs, including 3.5 kg of heroin, 2.98 kg of methamphetamine, and 13 kg of ketamine, were seized from the duo during the raid," the National Police said on its website.

A pistol with eight bullets and a motorbike were also confiscated from them, it added.

The Southeast Asian nation has no death sentence for drug traffickers. Under its laws, someone found guilty of trafficking more than 80 grams of illicit drugs could be imprisoned for life.

The Anti-Drug Department said that during the January-September period of 2021, the authorities had detained 9,828 drug suspects in 4,461 cases across the country, confiscating some 1.05 tons of illicit drugs. Enditem
