ISLAMABAD, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Tuesday that massive forestation is crucial for Pakistan owing to the country's vulnerability to climate change, urging citizens to join the government's efforts in securing a protected environment for future generations.

Addressing the launching ceremony of a nationwide spring tree plantation campaign here, Khan said that Pakistan could not cope with climate risks, particularly floods, desertification and heat waves which have become increasingly frequent due to global warming and reduced tree cover.

"Our future is linked with a green Pakistan and we all need to join hands in achieving this goal," the prime minister said, adding that it is the responsibility of every citizen to contribute towards protecting the environment.

He said that his government has been taking measures to protect the environment and launched several initiatives including the Ten Billion Tree Tsunami program which has gained international recognition.

The country has set a target of planting over 540 million trees during the current spring season from February to April, according to the Ministry of Climate Change.
