Vietnam's daily COVID-19 cases hit new record

HANOI, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam reported 169,114 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, its new daily record, up 8,438 cases from Thursday, according to its Ministry of Health.

The new infections, logged in 61 localities nationwide, included 169,090 domestically transmitted and 24 imported cases.

Vietnamese capital Hanoi remained the epidemic hotspot with 31,899 cases on Friday, followed by central Nghe An province with 11,057 cases, and northern Phu Tho province with 6,352 cases.

On the same day, health authorities also documented 19,326 COVID-19 cases detected earlier in northern Vinh Phuc province.

The infections brought the total tally to 5,448,935 with 41,228 deaths. Nationwide, as many as 2,983,222 COVID-19 patients, or 55 percent of the infections, have so far recovered.

Nearly 199.3 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the country, including 182.2 million shots on people aged 18 and above, said the ministry.

Vietnam has by far gone through four coronavirus waves of increasing scale, complication, and infectivity. As of Friday, it has registered over 5.4 million locally transmitted COVID-19 cases since the start of the current wave in April 2021, said the health ministry.
