HANOI, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam reported 180,558 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, its new daily record, up 5,078 cases from Tuesday, according to its Ministry of Health.

The new infections, logged in 62 localities nationwide, included 180,552 domestically transmitted and six imported.

Vietnamese capital Hanoi remained the epidemic hotspot with 26,220 cases on Wednesday, followed by central Nghe An province with 10,797 cases, and northern Vinh Phuc province with 8,875 cases.

On the same day, the health authorities also documented 86,982 cases in two central localities of Thanh Hoa and Nghe An.

The infections brought the total tally to 6,820,458, with 41,607 deaths. Nationwide, as many as 3,547,488 patients, or 52 percent of the infections, have so far recovered.

More than 200.7 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the country, including 183.7 million shots on people aged 18 and above, said the ministry.

Vietnam has by far gone through four coronavirus waves of increasing scale, complication, and infectivity. As of Wednesday, it has registered over 6.8 million locally transmitted cases since the start of the current wave in April 2021, said the health ministry.
